Hedge Trimmers - A Buyers Guide
There are many types of hedge trimmers in the market place - the choice and range can be very confusing.
In the early days hedges were invariably cut with simple hand held shears which was not only time consuming but very hard work.
As technology progressed and with the availability of electricity, trimmers powered by an electric motor were developed. These are still currently available in varying guises from a huge range of manufacturers.
Perhaps the most versatile of all are powered by two stroke petrol engines, which gives the flexibilty to move around a large garden without the need for extension cables.
More recently, with advanced battery technology, cordless electric trimmers have been manufactured which makes hedge trimming far safer because there is no cable to cut through!!
Electric Hedge Trimmers
These are probably the most widely sold device to the domestic customer. They have the advantage of generally being lighter and easier to handle than petrol versions.
Nowadays most gardens have easy access to an electricity supply so providing your hedges are not too far away from this supply this is probably the option for you.
A word of warning though it is very easy to loose concentration and inadvertantly cut through the cable so it is imperative that the electricity supply in use is fitted with a suitable RCD Click this link for more information about garden electrics
If you only have a small amount of hedging to tackle then a safer option may be a rechargable cordless trimmer. This also has the advantage of allowing you to move around your garden regardless of the postion of the mains supply.
Petrol Hedge Trimmers
By far the most versitile, powerful but unfortunately the most expensive choice available. That said maintained correctly these should last the average domestic gardener a lifetime.
The extra power and flexibility of these machines speeds up the whole process allowing you to spend more time enjoying your garden rather than working in it!!
For most electrical and petrol versions long reach attachments are available which negate the use of ladders therefore speeding up and making the whole operation much safer.
For all the devices described a range of motor/engine powers are available allowing you to cope with a simple privit hedge to the thickest of hawthorns.
One of the most tedious parts of hedge trimming is cutting the tops of the hedge particularly if you have to constantly reposition ladders and climb up and down to cut each metre length. For most electrical and petrol versions long reach attachments are available which negate the use of ladders therefore speeding up and making the whole operation much safer.
A particular favourite of mine is the multi tool - This combines a single petrol engine with the choice to attach a huge range of accesories including a hedge trimmer, strimmer, pole prunning attachment and many more useful pieces of kit.
